Parenting Corner: Candy Problems?

We all know that the day after a much-anticipated event like Halloween is often full of meltdowns and hard moments. It could be because of having more sugar than usual, or just simply from being over-tired, but it can definitely be a hard day. This is often the case for birthdays and other holidays as well! If it’s hard for us to get back into routine, it surely is for our children as well.

Consider lowering expectations for these days. If possible, take it easy and let everyone rest. A movie in PJs and an early bedtime might be in order for everyone!

If you participated in a Halloween tradition last night like trick or treating, you may also be drowning in sugar today. We know that as long as the children remember it’s there, they will probably ask for it. Sometimes hiding it works (out of sight out of mind), but a single peek at that pumpkin bucket and it’s over.

If you’ve enjoyed all the candy you want to enjoy and you’re ready to be done, consider using leftovers to bake yummy treats (lots of recipes online) or donating it to local organizations. Some families also start a “Switch Witch” tradition!  Along the same lines as the tooth fairy, and best used for children over 3 who can understand the concept, the idea is that the Switch Witch comes and takes the leftover candy and replaces it with a healthier treat or a small toy. This is also a great idea for children with food allergies who may not be able to eat much of the candy they receive.
