Parenting Corner: A Focus on Giving
So much goes into the magic of this season that it is hard to name one thing that is the “most important”. Decorations, food, parades, crafting, time with family and of course, presents, all contribute to what makes the holidays feel like the holidays. For young children this is the perfect time to put equal emphasis on all of these things, including the giving as well as the receiving of gifts. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being excited to open presents- we all feel that excitement! However, as adults, we also know that amazing feeling that giving can bring. Here are a few ways to encourage giving in your home this season.
Donations
Gather up gently used toys or clothing to donate to local organizations. Include your children in this process for deciding what they might not need or what anymore.
Baking for Neighbors
Encourage neighborly love by baking an extra batch of cookies to wrap up and give to neighbors or friends. Have your children decorate a card to go along with them!
Volunteering
Older children could attend a volunteer opportunity such as a soup kitchen or school events. Volunteering as a family is a great way to build morale as a family.
Picking out gifts for siblings/other family members
Take a trip to the toy store with the focus being on picking out a gift for someone else close to your child. Talk about how happy they will be to receive the gift!
Making giving part of your family culture doesn’t have to be something only done at the holidays either! Modeling a spirit of giving throughout the year, in the day-to-day, will ensure that your child feels and notices the great impact of generosity.
