Parenting Corner: Transitions
During the first few weeks of school, your children have experienced big transitions- in fact, we all have! These range from your child’s very first time away from you and in the care of, let’s face it, practically strangers (!) to a more simple but still significant adjustment away from the slowness of summer to a more structured schedule. Tears at the gate or classroom door are common (and very normal), and we know there also may be tears for you in the car or as you walk away from the school. Each child has their own way of adapting to change and new routines, and all of their feelings are honored at school. We are here to guide your children with gentleness, and it’s important to remember that it will not last forever!
The first few weeks of school are focused on creating new routines, connections to the Montessori classroom, and relationships with peers in order to help the students feel comfortable and at home. By mid-morning, the children are very busy with work that speaks to their souls in important ways. This is the beauty of the Montessori “casa.” Maria Montessori designed the Children’s House or Casa dei Bambini to be child-centered and nurturing to their independence and self-confidence.
Some practical tips to help this transition: develop a consistent routine in the morning so your child learns what to expect each day, make your goodbyes at the gate quick and positive (with a sweet ritual, if you'd like!), and spend lots of quality time with your child after school.
